2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission—Applications Due August 9th!

July 30, 2019

Friends,

The deadline to apply for the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission is approaching. This commission will create new political boundaries for federal and state elected officials that best serve the people of California, not special interest groups.

The United States Constitution requires that every ten years there will be an enumeration of the people residing in the states and local jurisdictions for the purpose of adjusting the allocation of representatives to the Congress. The 2020 Census will be conducted in April 2020. This census will be used to draw boundaries for various districts within the states to be effective starting in 2022. In many states, the process of redistricting is done by the Legislature. In California, the task of drawing boundaries for Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly and State Board of Equalization districts is conducted by a Citizens Redistricting Commission.

The California State Auditor is now recruiting for members of the 2020 California Citizen Redistricting Commission. The California Citizen Redistricting Commission was established pursuant to a statewide initiative and first used for the 2010 census. The 2010 Commission has continued to serve until this year and will be replaced by a new group of 14 Commissioners. To be eligible to serve on the Commission, individuals must have been registered with the same political party (or declined-to-state) since July 1, 2015, and have voted in at least two of the last three elections.

The initial 60-day online application period for the 2020 Commission opened on June 10 and remains open until August 9, 2019, with the full selection process culminating in the commission being established no later than August 15, 2020.  A fact sheet and answers to the top ten questions regarding the Citizens Redistricting Commission are available on the California State Auditor’s website. https://shapecaliforniasfuture.auditor.ca.gov

I am excited to share with you a video broadcast of a forum on the subject of 2020 Redistricting conducted on May 22, 2019 by the local group Saving California Communities. I found this forum to be very informative and timely. http://www.savingca.org/prog/20190522/

The citizen-driven redistricting process used in California has helped us avoid the partisan gerrymandering that has taken place in many other states, but it depends upon the active participation of thoughtful people. I hope you consider stepping up to serve our shared democracy.

In shared service,

Don
